The European hospitality industry cautious about international standards proposals on quality

Zurich, 13 May 2011 – On the occasion of its 62nd General Assembly held in Zurich on 12-13 May 2011, the trade association of hotels, restaurants and cafés in the European Union (HOTREC*) expressed caution about proposals discussed in the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) to standardise the quality and service offered in hotels worldwide. “These standardisation proposals clearly lack the support of the European hospitality industry, which will voice its concerns and promote its interest in ISO” commented Mr. Kent Nyström, President of HOTREC.The European hospitality industry is very much concerned that a set of international tandards proposals submitted to ISO, and dealing with “Quality criteria in lodging” and “Service provision requirements in accommodation establishments”, would indirectly force European hotels to offer standardised services according to criteria imposed on a top down approach.
Strictly standardised services are clearly against the interests of tourists, who are travelling to experience the diversity of services offered by different countries. “The diversity of the hospitality service offered is the backbone of European hotels’ competitive advantage on the global tourism market”, as further stressed by Mr. Kent Nyström. HOTREC therefore decided to attend next ISO’s technical committee meetings dealing with these standard proposals to defend the hospitality industry’s competitive features.
The next General Assembly of HOTREC will take place in Copenhagen on 26-29 October 2011.
